I attended the College of Staten Island of The City University of New York from 1986-1990 where I earned my BS degree in mathematics under my advisor Dr. M Sormani. While at CSI I worked as a math tutor in the college's math lab under Prof L Blois and I also did private math tutoring. After surviving the vigorous coursework at CSI I worked as a private math tutor from 1990-1994. At that time I entered a MA program in pure math at the historic City College of The City University of New York. While at City College I worked closely with my advisor Dr. K Hrbacek, until I earned my MA degree in May 1995. CSI had high standards, but it was at City College where I was required to work even harder. I remember Dr. Hrbacek's reply when I asked him why he never gave me an A grade on my homework assignments- when students with weaker homework assignments did get A's. His reply was "I know you could do better". I've never seen a college with higher standards than City College. I have very fond memory of my college days, especially at CSI. My math professors at CSI were ALL perfect instructors and my professors at City College were just brilliant research mathematicians and superb instructors! After finishing at City College (sometimes I feel that City College finished me) I adjuncted at many colleges in the New York City area from 1995-1999 while maintaining my tutoring business. In 1999 I landed my first full-time community college lecturing job and have been teaching ever since. In 2001 I pioneered live online math tutoring in the USA and it wasn't until 2005 that I started making math videos. My first video produced was pre algebra and in 2007 I started making prep videos which has been a huge success. I have some exciting things coming up for this year! Steven Gottlieb |
